Principal's Corner

Jim Bell - Principal

Jim Bell Welcome to the King Career Center, affectionately known as KCC. The doors were opened in 1974, and it was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Career Center in 1989. Our programs are taught by industry professionals and/or teachers with extensive knowledge of industry standards. Our mission is to prepare students for the world of work and success in life. At KCC, we offer 27 different career fields, each providing a hands-on approach to learning. This unique opportunity is available to all students that live within the Anchorage School District, and the program reaches out demographically to all of our stakeholders. It’s a great opportunity to explore various career pathways and find a passion that they can carry into their professional lives.

Besides learning new skill sets in their classes, KCC helps students make a connection with the workplace, providing support needed to bridge the gap between school and work. How do we do that?  Every day not only do we teach the curricular material in class, but also the soft skills necessary in the work environment: attendance, punctuality, communication, decision making, and teamwork.  We try to promote professionalism, and it is a major part of each student’s grade. Positive attitude, professional dress, use of safety gear and equipment, attendance, and respect are just some of the attributes that are essential to a successful career. Additionally, each student will develop his/her resume, cover letter, and a portfolio that will help him/her to have a competitive edge in job placement through KCC’s Job Center.

Our programs are guided and endorsed by an advisory council whose members come directly from industry. Our Job Center and On-the-Job training programs help students into the next level of opportunities, sometimes working directly with professionals from the job fields in which they are interested. We also work with many unions and have successfully placed students in various apprenticeships. These apprenticeships have become highly competitive, yet many of our students have earned an apprenticeship with a union.

KCC offers a novel approach to the schooling experience. Students quickly develop positive relationships with our faculty, and our staff is proud of the fact that we successfully prepare students for careers. Administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff are all here to help students open the doors to their future.
